Well, this isn’t exactly where I expected to be. I’m at the Apple Store in Palo Alto, rather than much farther down the coast. As I was driving along this morning, my iPhone completely died. Yesterday I’d noticed it doing this a couple of times — it would suddenly “fuzz out” with green video artifacts over the whole display, and then freeze completely. Sometimes it’d suddenly come back, sometimes not. Sometimes it would just plain freeze, hard; usually this happened when I tried to enter my passcode, but sometimes in other applications, too.
I’m a bit worried, because it sure “smells” like a hardware problem, not a software problem…I’ve just finished restoring the iPhone’s software via iTunes, which means I lost the few photos I took this morning and any text messages I received since the last backup (which iTunes helpfully tells me was Tuesday evening). The issue is that, since the phone appears to be working at the moment, I highly suspect they’re not going to be able to do anything for me unless it decides to freak out right here and right now. I’m a bit worried it’s going to appear to work, then die completely anywhere from a few hours to a few days from now.
Summary: Don’t be surprised if suddenly I vanish from the Internet and cell-phone network completely. Sigh. It’s going to be touch-and-go from here.
(And, yes, I can have an absolutely wonderful trip without my gadgets, too…it’s not the gadget aspect of things that I’d miss — it’s the communications with my friends, who matter a great deal to me. Still, I’m going to have a good time no matter what happens.)
